Santa Barbara's First Sub 4:00 Mile

There are 500+ U.S. American runners who have broken 4:00 in the mile. Until April 13, 2018, no runner had ever broken the 4:00 minute barrier in Santa Barbara County. Santa Barbara is home to HOKA ONE ONE Headquarters, so when we learned this, our milers were eager to line up for the challenge.

Kyle Merber, Graham Crawford, Ford Palmer, Travis Mahoney, and Jesse Garn lined up under the lights at Santa Barbara City College’s La Playa Stadium aiming to run the first sub 4:00 minute mile in Santa Barbara County. Fans lined the straightaways as Merber led the 4 athletes to a sub 4:00 minute mile. Merber became the first individual to run a sub 4:00 minute mile on an outdoor track in Alaska, in September 2017, and is now the first athlete to break 4:00 in Santa Barbara County.

The action on the women's side did not disappoint. It was 1-2 punch by NJNYTC's Ce'Aira Brown and Megan Mansy. Brown clocked a time of 4:36.94 and Mansy ran 4:37.59 to lead a group that produced the top five outdoor mile times in the world this year.

The days before the race, the NJNYTC team spent time at HOKA One One Headquarters touring the corporate offices, consulting with the product and innovation teams, and getting a sneak peak at new shoes.
